Pope Leo XIV visited the Vatican Apostolic Library on September 14, 2026. The library serves as an international research center that houses manuscripts, printed books, ancient coins, maps, and engravings.

The institution's history traces back to the fourth century with the Scrinium, which functioned as both a library and a document archive. By the late eighth century, the role of Bibliothecarius was established. A document from 784 under Pope Adriano I mentions a librarian named Teofilatto. Although the original papal libraries were dispersed during the first half of the thirteenth century for undetermined historical reasons, the library has since evolved into a research hub for scholars of various nationalities, religions, and cultures.
