Toribio de Mogrovejo: escuela actual de pastores

Pope Leo XIV presented Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo as a model for evangelization, prayer, justice, and pastoral service to the poor. During a visit to the Spanish Episcopal Conference and in Lima, the Pope described the saint as an example for bishops to read reality through faith and live like the Apostles with simplicity and courage.

The Pope sent a letter on September 8, 2026, which serves as a spiritual program and guide for episcopal ministry in Latin America. This document presents Saint Toribio not merely as a historical figure but as a contemporary school for pastors.

During his time as bishop, Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo founded many parishes, promoted councils and synods, and learned local languages to aid evangelization. He also worked to address the corruption and abuses of his era. The Pope noted that the saint's pastoral work was rooted in a deep connection to God and an intense prayer life.
