U.S. Bishops’ Administrative Committee Establishes a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence

The Administrative Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops established a task force to address artificial intelligence. Bishop Oscar Cantú of San Jose will chair the Bishops’ Task Force on Preserving Human Dignity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

The committee formed the group following an appeal from Pope Leo XIV in his encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, to foster cooperation and shared responsibility. During a meeting with technology firm representatives and specialists, the committee discussed ways to keep artificial intelligence at the service of humanity and how to address current dangers posed by the technology.

Conference spokesperson Chieko Noguchi stated that the bishops hope to help establish moral foundations for artificial intelligence models. The discussions focused on how companies can prevent misuse, ensure human oversight, and keep technology human-centered to respect personal dignity and benefit all people. The membership of the new task force has not yet been determined.
