James P. MacGuire notes that in 1896, Episcopalian cleric John Byron Diman founded St. George’s School in Newport, R.I.

The school became part of the Saint Grottlesex group, a collection of Protestant prep schools including St. George’s, St. Mark’s, St. Paul’s, Groton, and Middlesex that defined the Gilded Age.
