UNDA conference highlights pressures on religious freedom

The University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Law and Business held its 12th annual Religious Liberty Lecture and Conference last month to address tensions regarding religious freedom in a polarized society.

Michael Quinlan, an emeritus professor at the university's law school, delivered the keynote lecture on state interests and the freedom of thought, conscience, and belief in New South Wales. Quinlan argued that current legislative protections for conscientious objectors in the state are inadequate. He specifically noted how bureaucratic guidelines and policies can undermine these protections in relation to abortion and access to voluntary assisted dying.

Speakers from various religious traditions also addressed pressures on faith-based education. Mark Sneddon, director of the Institute for Civil Society, stated that religious schools must be clear about their identity, while Dr. Paul Morrissey, president of Campion College, spoke on the necessity of integrating faith into all school activities. Osman Karolia, principal of the Islamic College of Sport, also participated in the discussions.
