USCCB publishes update on Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador (USCCB)

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Secretariat of Migration published an update on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador. The brief, released by the Office of Policy and Advocacy, explains the purpose of the program and the USCCB response to the issue.

TPS provides temporary humanitarian relief to people from designated countries, allowing them to stay in the United States legally when conditions such as armed conflict, environmental disasters, or epidemics make returning home unsafe. El Salvador first received this designation in 2001 following a major earthquake. While more than 200,000 Salvadorans were granted the status in 2001, the number of Salvadorans with TPS was over 170,000 as of March 2025.
