Vatican diplomat calls for greater access to technology in developing countries (Holy See Mission)

Archbishop Ettore Balestrero told the United Nations Trade and Development Board on September 14 that the international community must ensure better access to technology to help alleviate poverty. As the apostolic nuncio and Permanent Observer to the United Nations in Geneva, Balestrero stated that poverty limits a person's ability to participate in economic, social, cultural, political, and spiritual life.

Balestrero said that access to connectivity, digital skills, and technology is essential for development in a digitalized economy. He argued that the international community has a responsibility to confront the structures that perpetuate poverty as a matter of justice.

The archbishop also noted that heavy debt burdens prevent governments from spending money on social sectors like healthcare and education. He suggested that a fairer international financial architecture is needed to address these challenges.
