Vatican diplomat urges assistance for nuclear weapons testing victims

Msgr. Robert Murphy, the interim chargé d’affaires for the Holy See Mission to the United Nations, called for international assistance for people harmed by nuclear weapons testing during a UN meeting on September 1. He urged the global community to provide medical care, psychological support, and social welfare to those affected by radiation and nuclear fallout.

Msgr. Murphy stated that victim assistance serves as an expression of justice and solidarity rather than just a humanitarian response. He noted that international cooperation, technical evaluation, and financial support are necessary to address these needs. He specifically highlighted the need to support communities that have faced disproportionate burdens, such as indigenous peoples, and emphasized that these groups must participate in decisions affecting their lives.

The diplomat also advocated for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons to prevent catastrophic environmental and humanitarian consequences. He argued that the dignity of human persons should not be subordinated to military or political interests and suggested that the testimonies of those affected by nuclear weapons should guide future global decisions.
