Vatican working group member Brian Patrick Green says AI slowdown calls are reasonable

Brian Patrick Green, a member of the Vatican working group on AI ethics, said that calls from technology leaders to slow the development of artificial intelligence are reasonable. Green, who also serves as the director of technology ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, noted that those working closest to the technology possess the best understanding of its capabilities and deserve respect for their opinions on the matter.

Matthew Harvey Sanders, CEO of Longbeard, described these warnings as overdue. Sanders leads the firm that created Magisterium AI, an engine trained on official Church teaching.

The push for a slowdown comes from several prominent figures in the tech sector, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Elon Musk of SpaceXAI. Approximately 1,400 employees from frontier AI companies have signed a statement requesting that the U.S. government support international efforts to deliberately pace the development of automated AI. This comes as regulation remains inconsistent globally and within the United States.
