Vatican history commission working to preserve truth in the AI age, says new US member

Pope Leo XIV appointed Francesco Cesareo to the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences to help preserve and communicate historical truth. Cesareo, a Philadelphia-based history professor at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and Villanova University, joined the commission following an announcement on Aug. 25.

The commission advises the Pope and the Curia on matters of historical importance. Cesareo stated that the group works to ensure historical facts remain accessible and are not distorted by ideological perspectives. He noted that the commission's research helps pass accurate history to future generations.

Established by Pope Pius XII in 1954, the committee was created to address the challenges of political propaganda and information control that followed World War II. The group aims to protect historical accuracy against modern distortions.
