Vatican Official Challenges Malawi’s Laity to Use Their Influence and Professional Skills for Evangelization

Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, secretary of the Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization, told Catholic laypeople in Malawi to use their professional skills, resources, and positions of influence to advance the Church's mission. Speaking on Friday, September 18, at the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops offices in Lilongwe, the Archbishop said evangelization belongs to the entire Church rather than just priests, bishops, and religious sisters or brothers.

The meeting included representatives from lay associations such as the Catholic Men Association, the Catholic Women Association, and the Young Christian Workers, who shared reports on their activities and challenges. Archbishop Nwachukwu is visiting Malawi as a special delegate of the Holy See before celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the permanent establishment of the Catholic Church in the country.

Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka, president of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops, led the meeting alongside other Church officials, including Bishop Alfred Chaima, Bishop Peter Adrian Chifukwa, and Father Valeriano Mtseka. Archbishop Nwachukwu noted that every member of the Church must contribute to its mission according to their specific vocation and gifts.
