Vatican publishes biography of Father Félix Varela

The Vatican Publishing House has released the first Italian edition of a biography about Father Félix Varela. The 208-page book, titled Félix Varela: A Biography, was written by Monsignor Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and published on July 9.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life, wrote the foreword for the volume. Paglia described Varela as a figure who helped found national culture through his writings. According to a Vatican News report, the archbishop noted that Varela's work shaped an identity centered on faith, humanism, the importance of conscience, and the need for independence and the end of slavery.

Born in Havana on Nov. 20, 1788, Varela was a priest active during a period of transition in territories held by the Spanish Empire. In 1821, he traveled to Spain to represent the island before the parliament in Madrid. His legislative efforts to abolish slavery and establish a government for the overseas provinces resulted in his exile in 1823. Varela subsequently moved to New York, where he served as a parish priest.
