Pope Leo XIV called for an end to divisive human logic during the Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square on September 20, 2026. Speaking to thousands of pilgrims from the window of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope argued that true joy occurs when affection and gratitude replace an obsession with merit.

The Pope stated that people experience joy, intelligence, and a sense of the future when the law of love interrupts the logic of calculation. He noted that mercy amplifies merit and that peace ends rivalries by bringing people together through gratitude.

Reflecting on the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Leo XIV explained that God has different paths and new thoughts for those who believe they have achieved success solely through their own efforts. He noted that the vineyard owner ordered workers to be paid from the last to the first to demonstrate that God's goodness is available to everyone.
