Virginia diocese investigates potential sainthood cause for Catholic father who saved his son

The Diocese of Arlington is investigating a potential cause for canonization for Thomas Vander Woude, a Catholic father who died 18 years ago while saving his son from drowning in a septic tank.

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge issued an edict on Sept. 10 asking the faithful to submit information regarding Vander Woude to Msgr. Paul deLadurantaye, the diocesan chancellor. Msgr. deLadurantaye stated that the edict serves as the first public notification that the diocese is considering a cause for sainthood. He noted that this may be the first cause the diocese has ever petitioned for.

The investigation includes examining any writings by Vander Woude to ensure they align with the theological and moral teachings of the Church. The diocese has spent several years researching the case and moving it through the processes of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in Rome.
