We are God’s vineyard

The Sunday readings for October 3 and 4, the twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, use the imagery of a vineyard to discuss faithfulness and care.

According to Maria Foss for On Mission, the reading from Isaiah describes the people of Israel as a vineyard that failed to produce a good crop because they turned from God to worship idols. This unfaithfulness resulted in the destruction of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel and their exile to Babylon. The prophet Isaiah depicts God removing the vineyard's protection, allowing it to be trampled and overgrown with thorns.

The Gospel reading from Matthew shifts the focus to the tenants responsible for caring for the vineyard. Both readings use the vineyard to illustrate instances where something went wrong regarding the relationship between God and His people.
