‘We operate with principles’ - head of bishops’ AI task force chats Goals, Purpose, Themes

Bishop Oscar Cantu of San Jose will lead a new United States Conference of Catholic Bishops task force dedicated to preserving human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. The group was established following repeated calls from Pope Leo XIV for a responsible approach to developing AI technology.

The task force will focus on three primary areas, including maintaining a dialogue with AI laboratories. Bishop Cantu said the group intends to build personal relationships with developers to understand their hopes and concerns regarding the technology. He noted that developers have requested guidance on how to integrate the Church's moral teachings, the common good, and the dignity of the human person into their work. The task force also plans to engage in advocacy.
