What Does a Deacon Do?

Deacons serve several roles within the Church, most notably during Sunday Mass. According to the Catholic Herald, a deacon proclaims the Gospel, may preach the homily, assists the priest at the altar, and helps distribute Holy Communion.

These liturgical duties represent only a portion of the work performed by a permanent deacon.
