What is the Assumption, and what does it mean for us?

The Assumption honors the belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. This feast is celebrated annually on August 15.

The teaching became official dogma through the 1950 papal bull Munificentissimus Deus issued by Pope Pius XII. The document states that Mary, having finished her earthly life, was assumed into heavenly glory in both body and soul. While the document does not confirm if Mary died before her assumption, many Church fathers and doctors believe she died to conform herself to her Son.

The Assumption differs from the Ascension of Christ. While Christ ascended to heaven through his own power, Mary entered heaven through the power of Christ. The Assumption is viewed as a reflection of human nature cooperating with God's grace through humility.
