What’s the task for the USCCB’s AI task force?

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced the creation of a task force on artificial intelligence on September 16. Chaired by Bishop Oscar Cantu of San Jose, the group will work for two years to promote policies and practices that protect families, workers, religious liberty, democratic institutions, human dignity, and vulnerable populations.

The task force was established by the USCCB administrative committee during a meeting in Washington. While the specific membership of the group has not been released, Bishop Cantu has previously engaged with technology leaders regarding artificial intelligence following the release of Magnifica humanitas.

After the two year period, the bishops will decide whether to dissolve the task force or turn it into a permanent committee of the conference. The announcement followed a private meeting between the administrative committee and technology officials.
