Who Really Pays for Restorations at the Vatican Museums?

The Office for Relations with Patrons of the Arts manages external funding to restore artworks within the Vatican Museums. While the museums generate approximately 100 million euros annually from visitor admission fees, these funds support the general expenses of the Vatican City State rather than specific restoration projects.

Monsignor Terence Hogan, who heads the office, oversees a process where the museum director and curators from the 17 individual museums identify which pieces require the most urgent care. Following this assessment, the office creates a catalog to help patrons fund the restoration of these works. This system addresses the need for specialized funding to maintain the more than 70,000 pieces of art held across the museum galleries.
