Why is the documentary ‘NAZA’ causing a political storm? Here are 5 things to know.

The documentary NAZA, written and directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, begins its New York City screening on Wednesday, Sept. 30, before expanding to other U.S. cities on Oct. 9. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and received a 25-minute standing ovation, but it has faced criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israelis.

The film features testimony from 24 Israeli military officers and soldiers whose faces are obscured. These individuals describe the military's cyber targeting systems used during strikes in Gaza. The title NAZA is a Hebrew acronym for "nezek agavi," a term used by the Israeli military as a euphemism for collateral damage to describe projected casualties from aerial strikes.

The documentary arrives amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which began following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas invasion of southern Israel that killed 1,200 Israelis. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 74,000 Palestinians have been killed during the conflict, with the United Nations reporting that at least half of those killed were women and children.
