Will AI kill us all?

Some experts warn that artificial intelligence could lead to human extinction, according to Michael Cook in The Catholic Weekly. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton estimates a 10 to 20 percent chance of extinction occurring before 2100, a view supported by Elon Musk. AI specialist Eliezer Yudkowsky holds a more pessimistic view, placing the probability of extinction at over 95 percent.

Cook notes that these fears follow a long history of scientific warnings regarding meteors, global warming, plagues, and nuclear war. He suggests the current anxiety stems from a lack of theological frameworks to help people find meaning when facing the end of life.
