Wrapping up France visit, Pope Leo calls on Europe to choose reconciliation over division

Pope Leo XIV called on people to choose reconciliation and peace over revenge and retaliation during a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Metz, France, on Sept. 28. Addressing the history of conflict in the region, the pope said that seeking forgiveness and walking together are not signs of weakness or concessions to evil. He told the congregation that those who seek reconciliation are not weaker than those who refuse to yield or those who seek revenge.

The Mass concluded a four day pastoral visit to France centered on peace and unity in Europe. Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Metz to watch the pope pass by in his popemobile. During the event, Metz Mayor Francois Grosdidier presented the pope with gifts, including a wooden tennis racket. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, also attended the Mass.
