Pope Leo XIV told people gathered in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, September 20, 2026, that true joy and a future are found when love replaces calculation. During his Angelus prayer at the Apostolic Palace, the Pope encouraged listeners to move away from logic based on competition and calculation in favor of the laws of love and mercy.

Reflecting on the parable of the workers in the vineyard, the Pope noted that God's plans are infinitely larger and more humane than human plans. He used words from the Book of Isaiah to explain that God's ways and thoughts differ from those of humanity, offering a reason for hope. He suggested that people should leave behind distorted paths to return to a God characterized by mercy and forgiveness.

The Pope observed that people often resist the generous justice and greater love shown in Jesus' parables. He cited the example of a landowner who paid workers hired at different times of the day the same wage, treating those who arrived last as if they were first.
