Young Catholics welcome opportunity to engage with bishops at Eastern African assembly

Young Catholic participants at the 21st assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) are using the event to speak directly with Catholic bishops about their experiences and concerns. The plenary assembly, held from July 19 to July 26, brought together more than 100 bishops from eight member episcopal conferences and various affiliated institutions.

The assembly focused on the theme of the synodal journey with young people, specifically regarding building communion, hope, justice, and good governance. Youth delegates told ACI Africa that the gathering provides a platform to offer recommendations to Church leaders. Georgette George Wani, a youth delegate from the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference, said she appreciated the bishops for creating space for young people to discuss the challenges they face within the Church.

AMECEA includes nine countries: Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, with Djibouti and Somalia serving as affiliate members.
