African Diaspora Engages With St. John Paul II’s Vision for the Continent at Washington Celebration

African Catholics and supporters gathered at the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C., on September 12 to celebrate the legacy of Pope St. John Paul II. The second annual event focused on the late Pope's vision for the Church in Africa and his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in Africa.

Participants engaged in prayer and discussions regarding how Christians can turn their faith into actions for justice, peace, and human dignity. While the 2025 gathering commemorated the 30th anniversary of the exhortation and the Pope's visits to Cameroon, this year's event centered on his journeys to East Africa. The celebration highlighted his goal for an African Church that draws strength from its own culture and identity while contributing to the universal Church.

The St. John Paul II National Shrine hosts these annual celebrations to promote the Pope's legacy by revisiting the messages from his pastoral journeys. St. John Paul II signed Ecclesia in Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on September 14, 1995, before presenting it in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 19 of that same year.
