Black Catholics need stronger voice in Catholic Church, Bishop Boxie says

Bishop Boxie addressed criticisms labeling him a diversity, equity, and inclusion bishop, calling the phrase a dog whistle that implies he was chosen over more qualified candidates. He stated that his education, formation, and ministry should serve as his credentials. He also noted that racism remains an undercurrent in the Church, citing his own experiences during his time in the seminary.

Data from the Unite organization shows that while Black Catholics make up 5% of the U.S. Catholic population, only five of the 268 active bishops in the United States are Black. Of those five, two are African American.
