Bishop Rotich recalls Cardinal Otunga's simplicity

Bishop Alfred Kipkoech Arap Rotich of the Catholic Diocese of Kericho called on the faithful to rekindle the prophetic witness of Cardinal Michael Maurice Otunga during a Mass held on September 5. The celebration took place at the Resurrection Garden in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, where the late Cardinal is buried, to mark the 23rd anniversary of his death.

During the homily, Bishop Rotich described Cardinal Otunga, the first native Kenyan Catholic bishop and cardinal, as a mentor who modeled simplicity and humility. The Bishop shared a personal account of the Cardinal refusing to let a priest polish his shoes because he did not want to create a relationship where a priest acted as a servant.

Bishop Rotich, who lived with the Servant of God for one year, urged Kenyans to follow the example of the late Cardinal's servant leadership.
