Catholic Sister Advocates for Inclusion of Women, Persons with Disabilities in Nigerian Society

Sister Francisca Ngozi Uti is calling for the inclusion of women and persons with disabilities in economic activity, community life, and decision-making processes in Nigeria. Speaking during an interview with ACI Africa on September 8, the sister stated that social exclusion prevents people from exercising their dignity and contributing to society.

Sister Uti serves as the executive director of the Centre for Women Studies and Intervention (CWSI), an organization under the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus. She spoke on the sidelines of a learning event focused on gender-responsive and disability-inclusive responses to violence against women and girls.

The CWSI works to challenge social structures and traditional practices that prevent women from participating in community leadership. Sister Uti noted that the organization advocates for women to have their voices heard in areas where historical customs have restricted their involvement. She explained that these advocacy efforts are based on the Christian belief that every person is created in the image of God and deserves respect and full participation in society.
