Ghana's bishops call for restraint following chief justice's remarks (Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference )

The president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called for restraint from public officials following remarks by the nation's chief justice. Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of Sunyani stated that the chief justice's comments were interpreted as favoring the current administration while criticizing the previous one.

Bishop Gyamfi said that judicial independence requires both actual impartiality and the visible appearance of being unbiased. He noted that a judge, particularly the head of the judiciary, must remain above partisan contests.

While addressing the controversy, Bishop Gyamfi said that demands for the chief justice to resign based solely on these remarks are disproportionate to the offense. He added that every public office holder should follow the same standard of restraint, regardless of their political party or who is in government.
