“Gift of grace”: Cardinal Otunga’s Witness Rekindled as Kenya Marks Servant of God’s Death Anniversary

Catholic communities in Kenya gathered at the Resurrection Garden in Nairobi on September 5 to mark the 23rd anniversary of the death of Servant of God Michael Maurice Cardinal Otunga. The commemoration honored the late cardinal, who is buried at the site, by highlighting his holiness, humility, and service to the Church.

Father Lawrence Njoroge, the vice postulator for the beatification cause, stated that the process continues to receive attention. Archbishop Philip Subira Anyolo of the Nairobi Catholic Archdiocese is acting as the petitioner for the cause and monitors developments through correspondence and visits to the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in Rome.

During the event, Father Njoroge noted Cardinal Otunga's role in shaping the regional Church. He recalled that the late cardinal and Uganda’s Servant of God Bishop Vincent Joseph McCauley helped establish the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa in 1961 and contributed to the founding of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
