Cardinal Otunga's appeal inspired Fr. Thomas McGrath to serve as a missionary in Kenya for 35 years. Fr. McGrath was a student at St. Joseph's Freshford Minor Seminary when Cardinal Otunga visited. Cardinal Otunga encouraged the seminarians to come to Africa and bring the word of God. Fr. McGrath was ordained a priest on June 29, 1969, and assigned to Kenya.
