Italian bishop resigns at 64 following apostolic visitation (Corriere della Sera (Italian))

Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Bishop Guido Gallese from his role leading the diocese of Alessandria, Italy. The 64-year-old bishop, who has led the diocese since 2012, resigned following an apostolic visitation into diocesan governance conducted by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, the retired president of the Governorate of Vatican City State.

The Pope appointed Bishop Luigi Testore of Acqui as the apostolic administrator for Alessandria. Upon his resignation, Bishop Gallese stated that stepping back can be an act of courage and humility for the good of the community.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, a pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, appointed Bishop Gallese as the ecclesiastical assistant for Italy’s national shrine association immediately following his resignation.
