KENYA: “Priests, Deacons are Human, Not Angels,” Prelate Says at Quebec Ordination

Bishop Rodrigo Mejía Saldarriaga reminded the faithful that priests and deacons are human beings rather than angels during an ordination ceremony at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 5. The Vicar Apostolic Emeritus of Soddo, Ethiopia, presided over the rite of Holy Orders for 2 men from the Quebec Foreign Mission Society who were ordained to the diaconate and priesthood.

During his homily, the Bishop noted that the Church occasionally faces reports of weaknesses or scandals involving clergy. He cautioned the congregation against responding with general criticism and instead urged them to support priests and deacons through prayer. He explained that ordained ministers face real difficulties in their ministry and live in societies where moral values are often declining.

Bishop Mejía also explained that the Church ordains individuals to the priesthood only after they have served in the diaconate to learn a life of service. He noted that the Sacrament of Holy Orders includes the distinct offices of bishop, priest, and deacon, which reflect the diverse gifts and ministries within the Church.
