Algeria is preparing to resume executions following a 33 year moratorium on the death penalty. The decision was made during a meeting of the Council of Ministers led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The government intends to apply the death penalty to arsonists and those responsible for the kidnapping, torture, and killing of minors. While the death penalty is already part of the legal system, its application has been suspended since 1993.

Amnesty International described the move as an unacceptable setback for human rights.
