Piero della Francesca depicted Eraclio returning the True Cross to Gerusalemme in a fresco located in the main chapel of the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo.

The artwork, which is now largely lost, shows a man walking barefoot toward the gates of the Holy City while carrying the heavy wood of the Cross on his shoulders. This fresco concluded a cycle dedicated to the Leggenda della Vera Croce and illustrated the return of the relic after it was reclaimed from the Persians.
