Hermanas Pobres de Algezares offer arroz and refrescos

The Hermanas Pobres de Algezares will offer rice, refreshments, and empanadillas to pilgrims during the Virgen de la Fuensanta pilgrimage on Tuesday, September 15. Sister Leonor Sánchez, the abbess of the Hermanas Pobres, said the group will set up a stall called the barraca de la Morenica to collect donations. These funds will support the opening of a spirituality house that the sisters will manage alongside the sanctuary of the Morenica.

Renovation work to prepare the former Benedictine monastery, located next to the sanctuary of the patron saint of Murcia, is scheduled to begin at the end of this month. The sisters have created a space on their website to accept donations for the project.

The Hermanas Pobres have cared for the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta since January 2025. This change followed a decision by the bishop of Cartagena after the Benedictine community closed its Algezares location in the same month due to a lack of vocations.
