Malawi’s PMS Director Urges Quality Education for Children to Effectively Mark World Mission Sunday Centenary

Fr. Ephraim Peter Madeya, the director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Malawi, says the country must promote quality education for children to properly mark the centenary of World Mission Sunday. Speaking to ACI Africa on September 13, he stated that the October 3 celebration should move beyond prayer to address the practical needs of children and local communities.

Fr. Madeya noted that the centenary invites the Church to renew its responsibility toward vulnerable people, specifically children whose futures depend on their schooling. He highlighted inequalities in the Malawian education system, pointing to the gap between well-resourced schools and government community day secondary schools in rural areas. According to Fr. Madeya, students from low-income families often deal with teacher shortages, poor infrastructure, inadequate learning materials, and limited supervision while trying to compete with students in better-resourced institutions.
