Minas Gerais celebrates the feast day of its patroness, Our Lady of Mercy, on September 15.

Pope John XXIII declared Our Lady of Mercy the patroness of the state of Minas Gerais in 1958. The main sanctuary for the patroness is located on the Serra da Piedade, situated between the municipalities of Caeté and Sabará, approximately 48 km from Belo Horizonte.
