Nigerian Catholic Archbishop Urges Seminarians to Embrace AI Without Losing Sight of God, Human Dignity

Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja told seminarians to use artificial intelligence and other technological developments without letting them overshadow their relationship with God or their understanding of human dignity.

Speaking to ACI Africa on September 9, Kaigama said seminaries should not ignore the opportunities presented by AI. He noted that while the Pope has welcomed technological innovation, the Holy Father has also warned of hidden dangers. The Archbishop suggested that seminaries should expose future priests to AI and scientific discoveries to ensure they remain open to new knowledge.

Kaigama cautioned that seminarians must not be imprisoned or consumed by this knowledge. He emphasized that the growing influence of AI requires discernment and an understanding of its limits. He made these remarks during the 45th priestly anniversary of the class of 1981 at St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Jos.
