The Church celebrates the liturgical memorial of St. Robert Bellarmine on September 17.

Born in Montepulciano in 1542 to a large, wealthy family, Bellarmine joined the Compagnia di Gesù in 1560. He studied at Padova, Lovanio, and the Collegio romano in Rome, where St. Luigi Gonzaga was among his students.

Bellarmine became an established theologian and was created cardinal and archbishop of Capua in 1599.
