Pope Leo ends Covid-era salary cuts for Cardinals and senior officials

Pope Leo XIV has repealed the 2021 Motu Proprio "A Sustainable Future," which reduced the salaries of cardinals, dicastery heads, secretaries, clergy, and religious members. The decision follows a review of the matter and consultation with the Secretariat for the Economy.

The original law was established by Pope Francis to address the financial emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. While the repeal ends the salary reductions, it does not reverse the financial effects that occurred while the law was in force. This includes the previous suspension of biennial seniority pay increases.
