Syriac Catholic bishops have started the process to remove Patriarch Ignace Youssif III Younan from office. This action marks the first application of the Mutua Concordia reform, which Pope Leo XIV introduced to allow synods of Catholic Churches to seek the dismissal of their own patriarchs.

The bishops initiated the procedure following years of tension regarding the administration of the Church. Reports indicate the bishops have not held a synod for 3 years. While the synod has voted to move forward with the removal, Rome will make the final decision.
