Safeguarding recognised as a practical expression of Christian love

Catholics across Australia will observe Safeguarding Sunday on 13 September as part of National Child Protection Week. The theme for this year is Love Protects, which describes safeguarding as a practical way to show Christian love.

Bishop Greg Bennet, chair of the Bishops Commission for Professional Standards and Safeguarding, said the theme shows that real love requires action. He stated that safeguarding is a necessary part of Church mission and ministry that requires people to be attentive and accountable so everyone can participate in the community. The observance emphasizes prioritizing the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
