Somalia holds National Internal Security Conference

Somalia held a National Internal Security Conference in Mogadishu on September 1 and 2 to discuss domestic security and the transition of authority to the Somali state. The event brought together federal ministers for Internal Security, Interior, and Defence, state government representatives, and members of the African Union.

The conference organized discussions into three sessions. Participants addressed domestic issues such as oversight of local police and the development of the National Security Agency and the Immigration and Citizenship Agency. Other sessions focused on closing organizational gaps to improve coordination between agencies and finding ways to make security measures sustainable by reducing reliance on international donors.

Minister for Internal Security Abdullahi Fartaag stated that the dialogue occurred during a transition supported by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia. This mission, which began on January 1, 2025, aims to transfer full security responsibility to the Somali state by the end of 2029.
