Svatá Ludmila – kněžna, mučednice a první česká světice

The Church commemorates Saint Ludmila, the Duchess, martyr, and first Czech saint, on September 16.

As the wife of Bořivoj I and the grandmother of Saint Václav, Ludmila played a central role in the early Christianization of the Přemyslid lands. She significantly influenced the religious upbringing of her grandson, the future Czech patron.

According to Church tradition, Ludmila was murdered in 921 at Tetín. She is honored as a martyr.
