The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown is a Latin Church diocese in central Pennsylvania, erected in 1901 as the Diocese of Altoona and renamed in 1957, suffragan to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Bishop Mark L. Bartchak, appointed in 2011, leads the diocese.

History

Established on May 30, 1901, as the Diocese of Altoona, this Catholic diocese in central Pennsylvania took its present name, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown (Latin: Dioecesis Altunensis-Johnstoniensis), on October 9, 1957. It is a suffragan see within the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona is the mother church, and a co-cathedral, St. John Gualbert Cathedral, is seated in Johnstown.

  • All Saints Parish to host Tamburitzans performance

    All Saints Parish will host a performance by the Pittsburgh folk ensemble the Tamburitzans on October 11 at 2:00 p.m. at North Star High School in Boswell. The event functions as a fundraiser for a two-week pilgrimage to Central and Eastern Europe for high school students from All Saints and Our Lady Queen of Angels, plus one parent per family. The program features music, dance, instruments, and costumes from American, Bulgarian, Croatian, Greek, Hungarian, Latvian, Macedonian, Serbian, Slovenian, and Ukrainian cultures. Father Aron Maghsoudi, pastor of All Saints, Our Lady Queen of Angels, and Holy Family, said the performance reflects the ethnic heritage of the parish. He stated the pilgrimage helps students reconnect with their ancestral origins to better appreciate their faith. Tickets are available for general admission, senior citizens, and students. People can purchase tickets by calling the parish office at 814-629-5551.

  • Feed the Sheep; Strengthen the Flock

    Bishop Carroll Catholic High School recently hosted the Diocesan Family Conference, which included speakers, prayer, and fellowship for attendees. In a column for the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Jonathan Nagy reflected on the conference and the spiritual mission of the Church. He noted that the event provided opportunities for spiritual renewal and inspired participants to evangelize throughout the diocese.

  • Saint Francis University sets Fall 2026 admissions visit events

    Saint Francis University has announced a schedule of open houses, specialty events, and personalized visits for prospective students and their families during the Fall 2026 semester. The university scheduled a Health Science Discovery Day for September 26 and an Athletic Open House for October 17, both running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Open houses will also take place on October 31 and November 14, as well as a Veterans Day Visit on November 11. These sessions allow visitors to tour the campus with student ambassadors, meet faculty, and receive information on financial aid, admissions, and student life. Visitors can also explore new undergraduate programs, such as bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Supply Chain Management, a Chemical Engineering concentration, and a minor in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Analytics. Prospective students may schedule individual campus visits on weekdays for academic overviews, tours, and meetings with enrollment advisors, or they may opt for virtual appointments.
