History

Centered on the city of Asti in Piedmont, northern Italy, this Latin diocese (Latin: Dioecesis Astensis) has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Turin since 1515, having earlier answered to the Archdiocese of Milan. Its territory contracted twice in the medieval period: in 1175, when the diocese of Alessandria was created, and again considerably in 1388, when Urban VI established the diocese of Mondovì.
