Latin-rite metropolitan archdiocese covering the Land Salzburg and the Tyrolean Unterland, raised to a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Leo III at Charlemagne's request on 20 April 798. Its seat is Salzburg Cathedral (Dom St. Rupert und St. Virgil). Archbishop Franz Lackner, O.F.M. was confirmed 18 November 2013 and installed 12 January 2014; the province includes Feldkirch, Graz-Seckau, Gurk and Innsbruck.

History
Based in Salzburg, Austria, the Archdiocese of Salzburg (Latin: Archidioecesis Salisburgensis) leads the ecclesiastical province of Salzburg and is one of the country's two archdioceses, the other being Vienna. Through the late medieval and early modern periods its archbishops bore the title of prince-archbishops of the Holy Roman Empire, ruling the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg, a distinct polity that endured until 1803. In that year the territory was secularized and became the Electorate of Salzburg, bringing the archbishops' temporal authority to an end.
