The Diocese of Palmeira dos Índios is a Latin Church suffragan diocese in the state of Alagoas, erected in 1962 within the ecclesiastical province of Maceió. The see became vacant (sede vacante) in March 2026 after Bishop Manoel de Oliveira Soares Filho was transferred to the Diocese of Castanhal.

    Pope Leo XIV appointed Giovanni Crippa as the bishop of Palmeira dos Índios on Friday, September 25. A member of the Consolata Missionaries, Crippa transfers to the Alagoas diocese from his previous role as bishop of Ilhéus in Bahia. The Diocese of Palmeira dos Índios has been vacant following the transfer of Manoel de Oliveira Soares Filho to the Diocese of Castanhal. Priest Adauto Alves Vieira has served as the diocesan administrator. The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) sent a greeting to Crippa, thanking him for his work in Ilhéus and expressing confidence in his new ministry. The CNBB noted that his missionary background would serve as a sign of hope for the people of Alagoas.
